“In talking with Luke Armitstead about A sculpture for my garden we spoke of storage spaces, gardens, street tree lists, and gallery scenes. The in-progress sculpture Luke describes over the phone is meant for the outdoors, a sculpture for the garden in his yard. In its future life, the artwork will become a structure for mosses, lichens, insects, birds, and other living things to inhabit. Luke is not just making an artwork, or even an artplay. Luke is making an ecosystem.”

LUKE ARMITSTEAD (b. 1989) is an artist working primarily in ceramics, concrete and metal, creating work with both design and improvisation, his works contain a sense of urgency and intuitive form. His ideas revolve around the built environment, abstraction, politics, living systems, and the body.
In 2011 Luke received a BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), where he developed a multidisciplinary approach to art making. There he developed interest in architecture, public art, and design. After SAIC, Luke spent time in Madison, Wisconsin, and later, Seattle, WA, continuing to develop his skills and interests. He received his MFA from University of Washington in 2020, and now lives and works on his art, home and garden in Seattle.
Luke has been shown in a number of Galleries throughout Chicago, New York City, London, Seattle, and the Midwest. He is currently represented by Season Gallery in Seattle.
